I gave up on the Linux desktop after 25 years

After using Linux as a desktop for a long time, and as my only desktop for over 10 years. I always had to compromise more and more and more just so i could say "i run Linux" and in the end it really don't matter and i came to the conclusion that Linux have had over 30 years to make a dent in the desktop market, and yet here we are.

This is funny :D you should think i just said i was going to take all the candy from all the people in the world. So to make it clear for the once in the back that did not listen. As the title sate, i don't believe in the linux desktop will ever take off or be anything worth while. That don't mean i won't use it or run it like i always have, just that the hole idea of linux becoming a player in the desktop market is not one i follow. I am still and always have been a big spokes person for linux as a server and backend system for a lot of things. So what this video is, is just me talking about some of the reasons why i don't think linux have a change to take over the desktop. And the things i talk about is not just me saying it, i speak for people that have told me a lot of those things again and again over the years, so there have to be something about it. If you don't like it, fine. The best way to make me look like a fool, is to make linux take over the desktop (also ChromeOS and android is not linux they are at best a fork). For all the talk about freedom in linux, it seams that you don't have the freedom to talk about your experience or not blindly follow the masses. People should have the freedom to not use linux or not even like it, but that seam to not be the case. Linux people seam to have a problem with anyone that are critical about linux and ask questions. That sounds a lot like a CULT :O

The concept of “product” does not exist with Linux Desktop apps because the Linux community does not understand a product is driven by end users’ NEEDS, not developers’ desires. That’s the fundamental issue with this whole thing this whole 3+ decades.

Just formatted my desktop pc yesterday, putting windows on it instead of Linux.
After one year using it, I realize my audio in MS Teams was terrible and couldn't fix it. I can't afford this in my work.
You said it great: philosophy is great but the important is to get things done.
Awesome video, interesting, deep and sounds so relevant. Thanks!

The issue of peripherals is ultimately what got me to ditch GNU/linux. I have drawers full of keyboards(the musical kind), mice, microphones, audio interfaces, webcams, etc . Most of the tools I have require a PC with specific software to be usable and, guess what, none of that software is available for me on GNU/Linux. I know this isn't *technically* the fault of the OS but regardless the result is the same: if I switch to Linux I suddenly have a mountain of useless plastic and wires.

My latest fun things learned in linux: linux knows you have an nvme, but doesn't trim the drive itself. You have to manually trim. there's a MILLION of these little death by a million cuts style problems. Literally EVERYTHING you have to fix. I loaded kde and it was an absolute clusterfuck. options everywhere. most of them making no meaningful difference in experience. it was the ability to incrementally drive yourself crazy just fucking with shit. Again: EVERYTHING IS LIKE THIS. It's insanity in a bottle, no matter what distro you choose.

Someone explained it really well. It is like a thousand papercuts. The heavy reliance on terminal still for certain tasks that a gui should do. Also people don't really know how to use their computer. They have the steps they must do memorized. If anything in that process breaks the user doesn't know what to do or troubleshoot it.

The biggest thing i hate about linux it is the community. They are arrogant, rude, ignorant. Not all of them, but they are a lots.

People don't switch to Linux on their home systems because Linux is so amazing. It's not. They switch to Linux because Windows and Mac suck butt and disrespect their customer base.

I have an old laptop and decided to try Lubuntu on it since it's supposed to be one of the best Linux distros for that kind of situation. I couldn't even connect to wifi and I did try a bunch of YT tutorials. Windows just works right out of the box and that's why it will never be dethroned.

I also gave up on Linux desktop a year ago. A lot of my games don’t work and there is still a lack of support for a lot of hardware that I own. Linux is fantastic for servers but not for personal use in the real world.

I am an Arch / Mint / Debian / Fedora user. And you are 100% correct.

Couple of years ago I used Debian buster (desktop not server version) for 11 months. I learnt a lot but in the end I thought "Why put more effort into using my operating system and getting LESS out of it when under Windows everything JUST WORKS". I believe that many people use Linux for ego reasons. They feel special when using Linux.

I guess the best solution is having two PCs using a KVM Switch so that you can share keyboard, mouse and monitor and use Windows for everything that includes non sensitive data that can be collected via telemetry (like gaming) and for everything that requires a save PC that has no telemetry (online banking, diary) and that is less likely to catch a virus you press a button on your KVM switch and instantly switch to your Linux PC. You can run both PC at the same time and switch within two seconds or so. Centralised access to your data can be managed via a NAS. Doing so you can have the best of both worlds.

All fair. That's why I double boot, so I can use Linux when I want to do my stuff like I want. Then I boot to Windows when I need maximum compatibility with my proprietary stuffs.

EVERY Linux user needs to watch this and then pass it onto the next one!

The problem with probably most of linux desktop fanboys… is that no argument is going into their heads… They just scream lalalala, and ignore any points which you try to make, why linux maybe not for most of people still.

Most fanboys just look at nice shiny things that work on linux, and ignore the rest, which are not working correctly. They don't accept, that such issues can be dealbreakers for some, to not even try linux.

you want gaming, and your game require kernel anti-cheat which don't work on linux, just dual boot, or use VM…
so what that you neeed dual gpu for VM, and must configure it correctly, so anti-cheat doesnt' trigger.
So what, that software you use require specific knowladge to configure it on linux to run with fully functionality.

I'm in your same lane, I also tried to get others to use Linux and I've used Linux for about as long as you. Then I started to use Win 10 on my daily driver and noticed that my cores were not getting as hot a on Debian 12 KDE or Mint 22 Cinnamon. My experience is that the fonts on Windows always look more crisp than Linux. Plus my expensive $3, 000 Contact Manager works on Windows. In all the years I used Linux there was never a good, robust Contact Manager that wasn't just a phone book address book. My Turbo Tax works on Windows, Quicken works on Windows, etc.

I can't believe that after all the years that I've promoted Linux, the truth is Windows works just as well. I could care less about free. The free no-pay world will never ever catch Windows because when you are being paid to produce, you have a real job and want to do a good job so you can keep your job.

You went from being a hardcore linux fanboy to "fuck linux" 😂. I hope to see a similar character arc with DT or the linux cast.

I tried the switch, but windows just works, ALWAYS.

I don't understand the linux fanboys talking about windows breaking, I feel like it's the opposite 😅

Yep man ur right, after 2 years of stable using Windows I've decided switch back on Linux mint. This is awesome distro but again I've got new problems as before, with steam was not starting, joystick didn't connect and external display stopped working after some time. So I've really tired of eternal Linux desktop glitches. Lack of stability exhausting me as the user. As the result switched back on Windows. I got used to lack of pro apps on Linux but these problems which should be elementary working aspects are more than enough shows how terrible Linux desktop experience is/was/will. 25 years and not working external display ou come on)))).

The product(s) lacks LEADERSHIP.
On the other hand, a commercial product such as windows, android, or apple, HAS TO GO WITH WHAT THE LEADER SAYS
