I used to go to Alistair Fraser's Scottish fiddle camp. He did not allow any written music, wee black dots were forbidden. Experienced classical violinists who played in symphony orchestras, would sometimes come for the week. They were usually in the slow class struggling with the beginners, because they didn't know how to learn or play by ear. The advanced class had a lot of little kids who grew up learning by ear.
