The award-winning unmanned combat aerial vehicle that was created expressly for operations from aircraft carriers is not what you might be thinking!
In this episode, we will learn more about this puzzling UFO shaped drone and the men and women who were essential to the safe operation of the flight deck and the aircraft carrier!
The US Navy's unmanned combat air system includes the tailless X-47B unmanned aerial vehicle, built by Northrop Grumman. Three years after the prototype was released from Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, it had its maiden flight in 2011. It was made to meet a number of requirements from the US Navy, including being able to operate from an aircraft carrier and being tough enough to endure the corrosive effects of saltwater. The UAV was designed by the navy to carry out reconnaissance operations and locate targets in hostile airspace. By the same person that created the B-2 spirit bomber, they were created for stealth and low observability. The jet-powered unmanned aircraft measures 38 feet long and a wingspan of 62 feet wide that can be folded for operation on the limited space of the flight deck. The 62-foot-wide, jet-powered unmanned aircraft has a wingspan of 38 feet and can be folded for use on the flight deck's constrained space.
