My grandmother had a cedar chest which was in her bedroom, and it was filled with things like doilies and tablecloths, as I remember. She bought it out of her own earnings in about 1915. I had it in our house for many years. It held family photos for a while, and then games and toys. When we bought new furniture for our bedroom a few years ago, our antique bedroom furniture moved to the guest room, and there was no room for the cedar chest. My son-in-law insisted that they wanted it, so now it is in their bedroom. It holds quilts now, mostly ones I have made.

This is crazy - Nancy Drew books were my favorite when I was a girl! Even more reason to love this story! This chapter also reminds me of all the stories my parents told us about their lives during the Great Depression, including the many uses of feed sacks.
