When you expect a rumble and it turns into West Side Story.

I cant stop obsessing over the rotoscoping work. Absolutely Flawless!

Fun fact: Originally, this rumble was gonna be a fight between animated and live action characters.
But the studio felt that was too uncanny... which is a shame given this film would have beat Roger Rabbit as the first theatrical full length motion picture to have Live Action crossover with animation
Silver linning the animators had to do Rotoscoping for the scene...and this still holds up as one of the best animated scenes ever. I mean yhe movements, the subtle facial expressions, the tension building with the other gang marching up on em.
It's these little things is why I respect animators/animation

According to youtuber Night Dreams, this scene is possibly one of the first films to show break dancing.

The smooth, rhythmic dancing of the chaplains compared to the militaristic goose-walk of the stompers shows alot of personality in the movie, making this the best scene in the movie 👍

If you’re wondering why the opposite gang is rotoscoped while the others aren’t, that’s because originally this was meant to be a live action animated hybrid. And a lot of it was done but then Warner Bros decided they didn’t like it. So they reworked it to be more animated and here they drew over the live action scene that was shot.

I just LOVE the music. It has a strong sense of 80's nostalgia to it.

Love how Vinnie put his hands up voluntarily without being coerced! LOL!!

I guess it's nice that some people unironically like the rotoscoping... But to me it looks uncanny and hilariously goofy. My friends and I just about died laughing at this part. Especially when Vinnie deadpans "These guys are really good!"
That said, it's a happy memory and this scene is still utterly unique.

This looks like it was becoming a DANCE-OFF! LOL

this is a great example for what they experimented with back in those times. They recorded people and drawn them over, thats why the movements are so smooth. They actually did this with the first appearance of koko the clown in the clown's pup, an episode of a small animated series " out of an inkwell " from 1919. It does give a big personality to the scene and the movie and its a really interesting method in animating. I personally love it and it's amazing (this is also why they look a bit more anatomically correct)

Though I can definitely see why most people argue that Ralph Bakshi is racist. As I can agree his works are definitely racially charged, I can't help but feel like he had a curiosity and fascination with black culture, aswell as a weird form of respect, and I feel like this scene kind of demonstrates that especially when Vinney is heard admiring their moves.

The Chaplains are drawn with mostly normal face shapes with some caricature thrown in and their moves are -mostly- graceful if not rotoscoped.
The greasers come in goosestepping, looking like radioactive goblins.

People need to stop being offended. Ralph Bakshi shouldn't have a stigma against him.

When you see 2 different race groups going at each other you hope it’s a dance off, we got the good ending 💀

I don't blame Vinnie. I wouldn't want to get into a rumble with Andre 3000 either.
