Drawing charcoal portraits have gotten much more fun for me since I discovered Pan Pastel. In this video, I explain what Pan Pastel is, why I love it, and how I use it together with charcoal to draw realistic portraits. (This video is, sadly, not sponsored by Pan Pastel...) 😄

Your newsletter arrived today and I had watched your “everything I know about charcoal” video a few weeks back and was intrigued by this medium. So fun for you to follow it up with this demonstration. Thank you for including the definition and description of what pan pastel is and how to use it. I’m a beginner so would be intimidated to take on more than just graphite for sketching at this time, but I will certainly be following along to see how you use it and increase my confidence for the future. Nicely produced video.

Dear Louise,
First thing first your paintings are an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. The details the expressions and how lively like are the faces and the shading and defining…. Basically you are very talented and I feel really surprised when you always mention that you won’t be able to achieve the talents you observe in other painters/artists. You also have such an amazing ability in using different mediums and still have that crisp fresh yet very artsy features to whichever painting you create. Just wanted to remind you of your inspiring talent and finally thanks for making these videos. Happy new beginning to you in 2023 your fan From Syria

I am about to do a watercolour....my first in about 25 years since college. It is a commission and I am worried I'm going to mess it up on my expensive paper

Charcoal (And acrylics) are so much more forgiving I think....
