Who is Krampus? Krampus, a horned anthropomorphic figure rooted in Central and Eastern Alpine folklore, has its origins in Germany and Austria. Throughout the Advent season, this devilish companion of St. Nicholas instills fear in misbehaving children. Krampus is said to be the offspring of Hel, the Norse god of the underworld. Over time, Krampus became intertwined with Christmas as Christianity spread. On Krampusnacht, the evening of December 5th, he is believed to arrive, contrasting with St. Nicholas who rewards well-behaved children. Krampus, in a darker role, punishes naughty children using birch rods and, in some versions, even kidnaps them in a basket, transporting them to the underworld.
