I laughed when I first saw this, because I always thought that Leo was perfect for the role of Capt. Hilts in a remake of this film.

DiCaprio must have gotten a kick out of this one little scene. I get to be in the The Great Escape playing Steve McQueen's role. How fucking cool is that.

So.. Pardon my misunderstanding. Did he shoot the scenes but was embarrassed to admit McQueen changed his mind and accepted the role. Thus his memory upon his co-stars question goes back to the footage he did do?

The movie was flawed, but it was never short of cool imagery and references. This is one of the many things that made it stand out. As well as the Bounty Law episode, shot like an episode of Rawhide.
