Comparing is so important, as sometimes name brand can be cheaper some times.

The Australian government has enforced unit pricing on groceries. Because of this it is easy to compare generic brands to brand names. I often find brand names on half price sale are actually cheaper than generic, when using unit pricing.
Unit pricing is measured in 100 ml or 1 litre for liquid and 100 grams or 1 kilogram for non-liquids
