Thee only time I've seen flannel work well is if it's cut very well, the pattern is more subtle, or monochrome, the guy wearing it is very physically fit, ....and it's paired with well cut, well fitted pants or jeans, usually dark wash jeans. Add nice boots, like chukka boots and a casual watch. It's tricky and sounds like a lot to coordinate, but if it's done just right, flannel can work. But 95% of the time it's not done right, and the flannel shirt hurts the overall look. A chambray shirt is a better option.. Ashley Weston at the Men's Fashioner says to stay away from flannel altogether as it's too hard for most men to wear it in such a way as to make it work.
