Star Trek is definitely over-hyped, but an optimistic series about peaceful exploration while espousing the virtues of diplomacy and egalitarianism is uniquely compelling. Star Trek is the best at this, and there will always be a place for it. It can always hold a mirror to our times to show how a better future handles current problems, while at the same time seamlessly diving into sci-fi concepts, philosophy and classic literature. It's a clearly-defined archetype within the genre that is somehow infinitely malleable and routinely surprising. The quality of each series varies, but I have found all of them to have been worth watching.

I prefer Star Trek any day, the exceptions being Discovery, Picard, and the Abrams films.

As far as Space themed science fiction stories in modern media are concerned, Halo is superior to both Star Wars and Trek combined.

I'm not sure there's anyone that would claim that Star Trek was the greatest space science fiction ever. Certainly if you look at polls etc. it barely gets a mention.

There are shows with much better stories, much better acting, much better space science fiction, much better SFX. Hell, Red Dwarf is better, and that's primarily a sitcom.
