Fireworks basics : MAKING FIREWORKS FOUNTAINS

Hello everyone, today I will show you how I made fireworks fountains. This simple device produce long flames and shoot a bunch of beautiful sparks into the sky.

I made two different compositions for two different effects. Those compositions are black powder based. The first one contains some 325 mesh magnalium to produce bright white sparks and a little bit of coarse pine charcoal. This effect does work with aluminium or titanium as well. Using coarser metallic fuel can produce even brighter and long lasting sparks.
The second composition contains about 30% coarse charcoal mixed with black powder. It creates long lasting golden sparks that fly into the air. It’s a very beautiful yet very simple composition that doesn’t require a ton of chemicals. You can add more charcoal to slow down the combustion and have an effect that looks like a fire camp or add less to have a more powerful effect.

The third and last composition is just made of the first one, aka silver composition in which I added about 15% microstars. Those were 3mm yellow microstars. Unfortunately we didn’t really see them. Either because they were too small or because I used water and dextrin as a binder and made them too fragile.

To make the fountains, I had to build some specials tools. I made the base and the rams out of a 16mm round wood dowel. The spindle was made using 7mm diameter nail in which I drilled a hole to put fuse and and prime the fountain.
The three tubes contained about 30g of propellant each and lasted for 15 to 20 seconds.

I hope you enjoyed… If so don’t forget to like, share and subscribe !!!

DON’T TRY THIS IF YOU’RE NOT SURE OF WHAT YOU’RE DOING !!!

NB : My channel is not dedicated to pyrotechnics !! Of course I made a lot of video about it (although 3 is not that much) and I will continue on making them but there is a ton of interesting subject and craft to learn and show on video. For example, the next video will be about homemade photography accessories (not sliders that have been done more than enough on Youtube). I might also try to build a star tracking mount for astrophoto but that’s not sure… (Tell me in the comments if you’re interested 😉 ) I will also make other electronics and DIY projects.

Very nice work, I feel that your charcoal is a little to fast ( Hot ) for what your trying to do. Normally willow, or grapevine is the best for fast charcoal, but for a ground fountain I would use a hard wood for my charcoal instead for a slower burn rate to keep your fountain burning longer. I make my own charcoal with a empty new one gallon paint can, that I drill a small hole in the top of the can, and place into camp fire on the hot embers, and add a little wood when needed to keep the fire burning at the right temp. I wait until there is no steam ( Smoke ) coming out the hole, I pick it up with a stick, and if it feels light I know its done, and let it cool. Always clean the bark off, and cut the knots out, this way your charcoal has a consisted burn rate. Charcoal can make or break your black powder, and it is very important to have different kinds of charcoal for different projects. I also re- crystalize my potassium nitrate until I get it pure. I re- crystalize everything with distilled water, filter, and air dry. My chemicals being so pure gives me professional results that money cant buy. I learned a lot from watching my pyro friends on YouTube, I actually learned a lot from ( Ned Gorski Fireworking 101 ) YouTube channel, I really am impressed with your work with making those fountains, something I really want to get into. I know You know your stuff.

I really enjoyed the video. I just recently revived an old hobby of making fireworks, something I LOVE doing. Next Independence day I'm putting on a show for my neighbors because we didn't get a public display last year because of that Covid crap. We won't have one this year, either. Hello from Washington state, U.S.A.

Don’t use glass marbles to mill flammable compositions! Use lead or bronze. Nice videography. Good work!

I have done it and it was really cool!

Hey that timer on ur igniter device. Will that allow you to cancel the ignition by flipping me off switch or once you hit that ignite switch theres no turning back?

So, is it the moisture that makes it safe to hammer the black powder mixture with the solid ram like in 5:37?

If youre a firework star maker im pretty sure you can put your tiny assorted stars in here even the crackle stars. Just make sure they can fit through the nozzle because idk the science behind it and i dont wanna be the cause of an accident.

Love your video. I am inspired and am in the process for making ferro ti gerbs. But how would we recreate something like red and green stars in the fountain along with the sparks?

Could copper oxide works for green sparks?

Beautifully made homemade tooling that has great outcomes!
If you hammer the comp with the microstars, do they get crushed? I didn’t see many stars in the test.

Hey you should make a video on using a microwave transformer to make a detonator if you don't have one already.

can i substitute magnesium in magnalium?

if i add titanium to the gold would that change the burn rate
