Incredibly eloquently put. This was exactly the right tone and language for this delicate and complicated situation.

There has been multiple telescopes on this mountain for decades built and funded by multiple countries.
I do strongly believe in preserving and respecting the culture and religion of others. But, it is an aweful big mountain and moving some dirt to erect an observatory on one of the highest points in the middle of the pacific to see what's beyond earth doesnt seem that big of a deal. They are not trashing the mountain they are just making a presence. Thats my 2 cents.

Dwayne, thank you for explaining this in a nutshell.... Sacred ground by tradition must be respected by governments.. " figure something else out" Its important to them - so it should be important to the Government.

Its not like they are building malls there, its a Telescope!

I'm pretty sure there's other mountains high enough like Mauna kea to build a massive telescope. It ain't that critical.

Stop the telescope. It's sacred land.

They could just build elsewhere I don’t like religion at all but come on the church is already there you can’t just build on top of it

I would understand if this was a pipeline or a fracking well or an oil refinery, but it's a non-polluting telescope. They don't have to "blow up the mountain" as I've seen many suggest. The TMT will use less water than the average Hawaiian home. Plus there are a dozen other scopes already up there.

The next best place to build this scope is an island off the coast of Spain. It's a mile shorter, has worse weather, worse light pollution and it wouldn't benefit America or Hawaii nearly as much.

Comparing what is happening in Hawaii to what happened to Galileo would be just as hyperbolic as the "blow up the mountain" people. While history is not repeating, it is rhyming.

I respect Dwayne even more for his activism, I just wish he had picked a different cause.

The Rock for official US ambassador 2020 :)

No. If anyone is willing to die because of stories handed down by pre-scientific cultures, *they* need to pause and figure something else out. Religion is not an excuse for irrational, selfish, controlling behaviour.
