That quote is amazing. "Content creation lets people who create garbage think you're making art, and tells people making art that they're making garbage". 😂❤😢

6:10 That bookshelf wipe transition! Top notch.

I totally get not making art for the algorithm. I tried to make tangible things to sell and stuff like that but it took all the fun out of art for me. Instead of focusing on making cool things I was instead stressed why I wasn’t selling anything

100% this... started my Youtube channel just over 3 months ago and came to this same conclusion... I was spending all my time cranking out content (48 vids over 3 months) and NOT focusing on the art/stories I set the channel up for in the first place. Have taken a step back to recalibrate, refocus and make my channel what it's supposed to be. A place for me to tell my stories, my way that will (hopefully) build a connection with a group of people that love the work that I love.

Not only that, but I also believe that in a world of AI regurgitated mediocrity unique voices, ideas and effort will shine through. Not only that but they are needed to show JUST HOW pedestrian generative AI outputs are. To cut through the thirst for mediocrity that these algorithms crave/demand.

For me artists need to believe in their vision, lean into it and not apologize for it.

Appreciate the video and sentiment as always Jake!

I often wonder if artists should start local artist groups where they meet up with peers and fans in their local area and work on art together?

I've been running a community board game group for over a decade and the real community and connections that have risen out of that group have been life changing in so many ways. For instance, we've raised over $67, 000 for our state's Children's Miracle Network Hospital. We started the group as a means for combating loneliness and it has done that and so much more.

An art group or local art collective could have so many benefits. Make connections in real life and go from there.

Artists are going to adapt to this but I have to admit it's been very difficult finding that sense of community. Seems like many of us are in this grind mindset which improvement is fine but I haven't found nearly as much collaboration or peer relationships like I did in the past. Hope all of you are doing okay.

This reinforces what I've already realized about the boom of Ai generated images trying to replace human artists: we have to go back to traditional art (or at least mix traditional with digital) not just to physically prove that we made that ourselves, but to connect with other people again. I feel really bad for artists that have been doing exclusively digital art up untill now, but the way things are now they have no choice but to get used to drawing on actual paper if they want to connect with other people or just have their artworks appreciated at all.

Edit: also, with every passing day I feel more and more vindicated about abandoning social media entirely since a couple of years ago. I'd rather be a mysterious and intriguing artist that only ever "posts" their work in books, instead of a factory machine with no free-will for the corporations who want to control EVERYTHING now

SUPER thought provoking. This is giving me a lot to think about.

Loss of physical media is a huge problem. Even if you're making animation (which has to be played digitally), you should still strive to create something that's worth buying a physical dvd.

Been following you for years, and your videos are always the exact encouraging kick in the pants that I need to get my creative juices flowing. Thanks Jake! I hope we can meet in person one day

Thanks for your advice! It really makes a lot of sense. What we are losing to the unsurmountable mass of content is empathy, human experience, connect!

Art is not content, A picture or a video of an art piece is content, what i learned from my hopeless time on social media is that it is impossible to create art as fast as an influencer taking a picture with their phone and posting it

Thanks Jake!! ❤ connection is critical. I couldn't agree more.

I've been feeling this so much in regards to algorithms. Instagram throttled a post I made for 11 hrs and only showed it to 23 people. I've been thinking socials may not be the best place to post anymore. My website, blog, and Patreon are starting to feel like an afterthought but I'm not playing an algorithm game there. It's just an archive of my journey.

Thanks so much Jake. My wife and I have started our own art business about a year ago and it's been so tough. More and more I feel like the only way to make unique art that I care about and makes the world just a little better is through making physical stuff and I just had no idea how to go about making that a reality. I'm so glad that you are such a great inspiration. God bless!

I love watching your videos Jake, they give me a sense a motivation, not just the cheap kind though, it's the kind that will last with me for a whole week. Thank you so much for making good content, now I'm gonna go make something!

I love this. It's so true that you feel a different type of connection with someone when you own something tangible that they've made. I hope to focus on that more!

You're a champion, Jake! I always love hearing your thoughts on topics like this. Thanks for being an inspiration to create!!

I really relate to Jake Morrison's (and many artist's) aversion to social media these days! I've felt equally lost online and have almost entirely stopped engaging on any social media because it feels vacuous and hopeless. But your thoughts here make me want to give it a second chance. Content creation is daunting... but connection? That seems doable. Thanks Jake! Great video.

So this video is one big ad. Not everyone can make something physical. Granted you're right about the connection part, but the ones I feel make connection through YouTube are the ones that put their personality into it. There's a lot of them, and they vlog on a wide range of things from photography, to art, to reaction videos, etc. In fact reaction videos are dong just that, you start watching someone and you start enjoying their presentation or how they react to things, and eventually that makes a connection with you.
