Why Cathrin Manning’s channel is dying

Cathrin Manning's youtube views go down for a reason. Here's WHY!

Cathrin Manning, better known as The content bug made some decisions which impacted the growth of her YouTube channel negatively.

What is the reason why Cathrin Manning’s views go down?
The first thing you should take a look at is your audience:
Are you consistent enough with your YouTube videos that it attracts the right audience?

Also, do you trigger the right YouTube algorithm?
• Educational content: YouTube Search
• Entertainment: YouTube Home + YouTube Suggested

Look at your value proposition.
What is the reason to click for viewers?

When you are vlogging:
Are you good at storytelling? Because your competition is.

How are you communicating why viewers should click in title and thumbnail?

Blowing up a youtube channel might not be the right strategy for you.

ADDITIONAL NOTE:
Personally, If I would have been bored with my content (in cathrins case the youtube advice content), I would have stopped the main channel and would have continued with the vlogging channel which she is more passionate about.
But she choose the channel with a bigger number of subscribers... not the channel with the best audience.

The problem now is that she didn't break with the youtube advice niche on her main channel entirely, she still makes Analytics videos once in a while for example.
The algo can never find a new audience if she doesn't do a 100% clean cut from her youtube advice content.
It keeps suggesting her videos to a youtube advice audience which doesn't respond to her house videos.
So it stops suggesting videos, hence the spiral downwards.

I did it myself, I left my DJ channel with 40K+ subs to start in this niche where I was more passionate about

I think she would have gotten away with the broad content on her vlogging channel (although slow growth), because she built it from scratch with an audience that is coming to expect that of her.

If I was Cathrin Manning, a video like this would feel like an attack. I mean, what’s the point of critiquing someone’s channel like this all in hopes to get lots of views on your own channel? Remember she’s a human being whose mental health should be cared for. You’re critiquing a human being who is evolving and finding her way.

I used to really enjoy Cathrin's old vlog channel. But over the past 5 months or so her vlogs have been really poor . I understand why she switch from YT tips, because she's not very knowledgeable about how YT works her videos where very basic and repetitive . I think she has lost her passion for YT and is only sticking around because she is making bank! She's now talking about monetizing some of her IG stories !

I used to follow her and definitely understood her reason for merging her channels. It wasn’t for me so I unsubbed. Funny enough I checked on her a few days ago and it does seem her pages is more focus on this home renovation. I’m sure she knows what she’s doing and okay with how things turned out.

Well she changed her content strategy because she was sick of YouTube growth type videos only, so things might take a hit. Of course her views have been affected but I think she's doing ok. I'm sure she has other streams of income and future ideas for ways to make money.

I loved every second of this CONSTRUCTIVE critique and I learned something for my life and career on cloud consulting: don’t work in 9 client projects at a time but work at a pace you can sustain so that you have something to look forward to tomorrow! Brilliant ❤ I got my dream job in tech and burned out fast … I’m doing things differently now. Slow and steady. THANK YOU. While I wanted to hear your thoughts on Catherine, you actually taught me about my own life!

I don’t know her, but I think your analysis makes sense *if* her objective right now was to “keep growing the channel”, and isn’t that exactly what she felt was a problem? Maybe — like so many others — her deeper goal is to be true to *herself*, and accept that her YouTube analytics and revenue are not her top goal.🤷🏼‍♀️
It’s a reasonable choice to have “grow on YouTube” as the objective.
It’s a reasonable choice to have “YouTube growth” take a backseat to being yourself regardless.
What might be confusing to people and might be what you’re responding to… is that it’s also reasonable to start out with a strong intention/goal to “grow my YouTube”, and then, later, to change. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Again, I don’t know her, but seems she HAS experienced pained her struggle with feeling the pressure to DO and BE what her YouTube trajectory and growing audience wanted.
I support and celebrate anyone who chooses to back away from what caused them to grow or especially to go viral.
This choosing to back away from what got you here is common… not just on YouTube. I think it’s healthy.
Of course it’s also always possible the person *believed* the audience was always there for the creator and NOT for what the audience was personally gaining from following that creator. That’s a mistake I see a lot from creators/influencers that started out by being helpful and then pivoted to… not, while *wondering* where everyone went. I see that a lot, but it’s just don’t see that with Catherine’s channel, because she seems quite aware of all the issues around the choices she’s made.

I watched this video twice, all points are valid! combining multiple topics on one channel is a killer

This is absolutely brilliant analysis, Dexxter. Absolutely brilliant. Cathrin is not alone -- all of the shallower how-to-YouTube channels are dying. I learned that from Kevin Chee recently. He's like you and me -- an ex-techie that does YouTube now. Anne Dube had 14K views/video, now she's down to 1.4K views/video. You nailed the problem I figured out with them - they lack depth. From your analysis it's clear they never really knew why they succeeded so wildly, so now they don't have a system to succeed.
Also watching their videos it's clear they never really studied YouTube success in a way that made them deeper. They didn't continue learning and hone their how-to craft. So they have good useful tips here and there but they lack depth to keep their viewers wanting to learn more from them as their viewers gain more knowledge.
You, Kevin Chee, Morningfame, Nick Nimmin, Channel Makers and arguably Vanessa Lau are the future of how-to-YouTube. You all do great analysis. Think Media doesn't do good analysis -- but they're the gorilla and they do have a success system that can get a raw beginner started and headed in the right direction (how well it works for advanced YouTubers I don't know). Again, thanks for this analysis, it's spot on.

Just when I was checking out her channel (thinking exactly what You talk about here) after couple of years/months of not seeing anything from her, and now I just got Your video recommended !

My question for You,
I am thinking about my content, and if I should split my channel. I have both travel and photo/filmmaking content.
My best videos have been from all of these topics, but I think about splitting it into two channels. One for Travel and one for Photo/Filmmaking/Tutorials/Reviews, on another I get more people telling me that I should have all that content on my channel.

What do You think ? What would be better ? All in one or Split ? (at the end of the day they can be somewhat connected, but there also are these single video ideas which are a bit far from each other like : " Fuerteventura - Travel Guide" & "DJI FPV in 2023!" Feels like these kind of videos are a bit too far to have some kind of connection/niche

It’s evolving. Her audience with grow with her. I’m actually going to binge watch the last 4 months x

Appreciate the cautionary tale, Dexxter. Great breakdown of technical and tactical points! Yeah, it's important to not confuse an online audience with people we know in person. The former loves _your channel_ for what they want that you provide, and ideally the some in the latter group love _you_ for who you are. Thanks also for adding that last point: it's an important cautionary tale beyond the confines of YouTube.

I like Cathrin Manning, and I've watched a lot of both her YT content and her current VLog type stuff. That said, your comments are valid and on point, although I feel slightly uneasy about the ethics of doing a critique of a channel without the permission of the channel creator.

I think at least part of the reason for the change in content, for both her and Annie Dube, was burn out on making YT tutorials. At one point they were both making twice weekly videos for quite a long time, and there just aren't that many subtopics in this niche. Eventually you are going to do a lot of repeating of essentially the same video, and I don't think I would want to do that long term either.

I've ordered both the storytelling books you recommended through your Amazon link, because that's an area that I really want to improve in.

This is a super fascinating breakdown! I think one big factor here is she blew up during covid when far more people were at home and bored, thus they had more time to watch videos and people were looking for something to do (like start a youtube channel!). Now alot of her subs have moved on to other hobbies. She was able to branch into the vlog content because she does have an infectious personality and I liked it at first....but our economy is terrible right now. Many of us who are older than her are struggling with housing whether that be to purchase their first home or find an affordable rental, so after a while hearing about her dream house and making $300k in a year just got a bit...depressing for me. Many people would call that jealousy but if I'm going to take care of my mental health it makes no sense to watch videos on something I have no hope of achieving right now.

Good advice here. I stopped following her when it got all over the place. I don't think she's very interesting to my age group (GenZ) and I just wanted to learn how to grow my own channel. When her content was no longer about my interests but about her, I quit.
