With the ever-increasing cost of everything these days, for many, the idea of DCC sound is too expensive to consider, as a decent sound decoder will set you back £120+. However, by using a far cheaper Hornby TTS decoder and a speaker upgrade, a good DCC sound experience can be achieved at half the price! This video demonstrates upgrading the speaker on a Hornby TTS decoder using a "Volcano" speaker from Horns & Whistles Workshop.

Nice video! I have some very expensive sound set ups but I also use a number of TTS decoders which I rate as good value for money. The only downside I have found is the lack of ability to synchronise the chuff rate on my steam locos. The speaker you have used is very impressive. TSS decoder amplifiers are rated to use 8ohm speakers, is the one you have used an 8ohm speaker?

If only Hornby made enough TTS soundchips to meet demand, but sadly they never do and consistently fall short in most things they do.

Thanks for the video. I use TTS sound decoders for the very reason you say, affordability. I haven’t found a way to vary the volume of the sound which on a couple of my steam locos is way to loud. I can’t see a CV setting for volume. Do you know of one?
