I also kinda think that the clunky-ness of the animation style of the day contributed to the style of the movie. Our brains know the characters aren't human so the slightly more stiff motions of the characters make sense.

80% of this films charm comes from the late Robin Williams performance, so they couldn't do a sequel even if they wanted to because there is no recasting A Robin Williams roll, just as Disney how well that worked out when they recast Will Smith as the Genie in the live action Alladin remake.
