The World's Largest Steam Engine! Pacing Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 On The Greeley Subdivision!

READ:
Another year, another end to a great Big Boy tour. Join us as we pace the engine from just north of Greeley, CO to just north of Nunn, CO. 4014 has its work cut out for itself, tackling the 45-mile long 1.0% to 1.2% uphill grade between Greeley and Speer Junction, WY. It is evident that now, 5 years after having been restored, that Ed and crew have supreme confidence in the locomotive, as the 4014 powers its train virtually unassisted by the trailing diesel.
The consist, including water cars, diesel and train, clocks in at around 1,300 tons, roughly 300 tons under the maximum tonnage a Big Boy can take up a 1% grade at 40 mph. Maximum speed attained was ~40 mph, with a 25 mph restriction through Pierce, CO, and a following 30 mph signal restriction for about two signal blocks afterword. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of a 4000 working steam at speed =)
FAQ (Read before commenting):
The water overflow from just in front of the rear cylinder on the fireman's side is the exhaust steam injector overflow port. Discharge from this port is normal when starting and stopping the injector, and when the injector switches between live steam and exhaust steam.
The diesel locomotive, while no longer necessary for PTC compliance, will continue to periodically be used where it is expedient for steam locomotive fuel conservation and assistance on long, sustained grades for power & dynamic braking. It does NOT provide power for the passenger coaches; there is a dedicated generator car for that purpose.
Table of Contents:
0:00 - Greeley to Eaton (35 mph up to 40 mph)
7:44 - Eaton to Pierce (40 mph, down to 25 mph thru Pierce)
20:01 - North out of Pierce (25 mph up to 30 mph)
26:45 - North into Nunn (30 mph up to 40 mph)
