Huh? There should be a penalty for not using it and causing a collision.

In Colorado there is no penalty for using a runaway truck ramp. It's a safety feature there for you to use if you need it. Afterwards, you may have to answer to why you needed it. You may end up with a citation for defective vehicle if your brakes are faulty, or failure to maintain control of your vehicle if you start from the top of the hill too fast and can't slow down. Either way there's usually a tow bill and a repair bill to pay also.

I'd much rather pay a penalty than kill someone, I don't care if it's over $5, 000.

Why should there be a penalty? Isn't that literally what it's for? If anything, there should be a penalty for choosing NOT to use the ramp and causing damage and loss of life, instead.

The penalty will be for using it for reasons other than an emergency, ie fly tipping, abandoning your car there, overnighting, parking, etc.

They should get a medal for using the runaway ramp.

So they're trying to discourage truckers from using these ramps?

Depends I hit a runaway ramp today. Something in the transmission broke and kicked me out of gear and I could not get the truck back in gear so it went from 35mph - Over 80mph in a matter of seconds. The truck was taken to a scale and it was found that the transmission pretty much blew up so it wasn't my fault and therefore nothing on my end. As of now!!

Hey Alex! I don't think there are any penalties, since the run away ramp is to prevent injury to motorist. I think the only bill would be a tow truck to drag you out, if it a pit. Some of the other ramps I have seen are steep uphill climbs.

I'm fairly sure they are free to use.

But there are costs after you are stopped.
1 Damage to the truck and/or cargo
and / or
2 The cost for the tow company to get you out / transport the prime mover / trailer(s)
and / or
3 Time lost, as the removal is hours minimum.

OMGosh! I would certainly hope there are no penalties for avoiding a fiery crash by any means necessary! Thanks for sharing and connecting for growth!

43 years and never had to use one. Half my carrrier was older equipment without engine brakes. You follow the posted speeds and drive according to your ability you may never need one. Back in the day was whatever gear it took you to climb that hill is the one or lower you come off it.

Are truck brakes so bad manufactured in the USA or what is the reason for a break failure?

In Canada its law you use it if your brakes fail. Failure to do so can result in fine or arrest.

There isn't a penalty but you would have to pay for the use of it since you tore it up by not knowing how to drive your truck in that terrain. Just like you'll pay for the tow and repairs ( or your company).

One time I had to use one while taking a shipment to apple valley ca. I had just finished a 5 hour energy when I saw lights in my rearview mirror. I realized it was a UFO and hit the gas. Next thing i remember i woke up in a runaway ramp with my trailer and arbys sandwhich missing. Got fined and lost my jbh contract.

That is some major bs how can you control when your truck messes up? The state should pay for every cent of it ridiculous how greedy our country is.
