I'm starting to tell the difference in composition style between Phoenix and Bergersen.


Bergersen always goes for the bombastic melodies, lots of horns. His pieces generally invoke images of battles, races, and heroism.


Phoenix seems to prefer woodwind and vocals. His stuff always has this sort of swelling rise of emotions, mixing an air of mystery and wonder with somber victories and bittersweet triumph.


I don't know what the takeaway is on this, but I love their music regardless.

0:00 – A couple stands in the entranceway of their small home. It’s wartime and the man is going off to fight, but the two linger there, savoring every last moment they have together. The woman sniffles every so often. “I wish you didn’t have to go, ” she says. “So do I, ” her husband replies.

1:01 – He has gone now and the woman’s emotions have taken hold. Crumpling onto the carpet, her body racks with tears as she confronts the very real reality of a life on her own.

1:17 – Something clicks in her mind. She won’t stay here, in the darkness of her own home, while her husband fights alone. She can’t – they won’t survive without one another. Crumpling up her fist, she vows to follow him, packs up things in a hurry and leaves her home.

2:17 – We follow her journey, through trains, boats and the countryside as she tries to track down her husband. It’s not easy – her dress gets torn, she’s forced to stowaway and avoid capture by the police – but she never gives up, her determination to be reunited overriding all else.

3:03 – She’s found her way into the soldiers’ camp, but a boat is in the distance and soldiers are getting on, ready to board. She spies him getting on and runs, shouting his name…

3:17 – He turns to see her and they meet in another embrace. She looks up into his eyes, never wanting this moment to end. “Take me with you, ” she says.
