Does anyone else wonder why Ukraine wants to go back to the South instead of advancing further to the West from the East which is what is tactically the more feasible thing for them to do as of right now?

They will encounter little to no resistance from the Russians while moving further West and strengthening their strongholds there because this is where their strengths are.
