The COSMIC desktop looks VERY interesting...

Is the COSMIC dekstop any good? Made from scratch by System76, it seems extremely promissing and could bring a new twist to the Linux world. In this video, we take a look and do an early "review" of this desktop environment, while keeping in mind it's in a pre-alpha state.

Props to the System 76 team, they're nailing the hybrid tiling + stacking WM features. I've tried XFCE replacing its WM with i3, but i3 doesn't have the mouse integration like this demo. Can't wait for a release version of Cosmic.

Every video about Cosmic is positive. And I'm absolutely here for it. I've been using it on fedora 40 and honestly I have had 2 errors in the last few months. Persistent errors but hey, it's my choice to use pre-alpha software. So that's really on me.

This looks like a very old version of COSMIC. The applets today have better icons and names. The settings application is also using GPU rendering now, which fixes the graphical corruption of page headers.

I'm currently on Gnome with Pop Shell (to enable tiling) because my i3 setup made it difficult to get "simple" things to work on my laptop (hosting presentations, plugging in external storage devices, etc.). If System76 can get the tiling to work as smoothly as a dedicated tiling window manager, without giving up the conveniences of Gnome, I am all for switching to COSMIC.

We desparately need competition in the linux DE space. Gnome is meh, KDE is okay. I'd like to see Cosmic dethrone Gnome one day.

So, it's Gnome, but written in Rust. Why?

Rust and unstable, are you serious? Sure, you are. Rust isn't a remedy from instability and bugs.

IDGAF what anyone says KDE is the DE folks need to use.. best DE out there anything else is far inferior

I hate the top panel of the gnome desktop environment. It's just waste of some space of your display while you could achieve the same thing within one panel. Just like KDE, cinnamon and Windows.

I don't need any "revolution" in desktop. Frankly Gnome is a "revolution" that probably few people asked for. The Windows 7-style desktop is the tried-and-true desktop, and I just want a stable version of that without all the bugs on Wayland.

KDE Plasma 6 is still the best desktop experience I've seen and used to date, better than other Linux UIs, Windows, and Mac OS desktops. All Linux really needs is better App support.

Ngl the UI is trash as of right now. The padding is just way too big and animations could be way better. Libadwaita looks and feels way better

As a non Linux Desktop user that understands the landscape but still hasn't found a good enough DE to make the switch, if they deliver on the stability and Wayland support, with solid a VRR implementation I'd be very interested.
