Theres a lot of other options, like just roaming the world for more cows from the wild, or just buying the bookshelf from a librarian villager. Anything but the poor horse

lmao I feel this. I started to hate the leather grind in early game, so I instead use my early iron farm pods to trade with toolsmiths for emeralds. I then use those emeralds to buy bookshelves from a librarian. You just need 3 leather to get it all started to make the lectern for the first librarian, then from there, it's all trading iron for emeralds and buying more bookshelves. I'll either break the bookshelves if I need books or place them for the enchanting table. If you want to go even cheaper and without an iron farm, just trade stacks of logs (2x2 spruce trees, rows of oak trees, whatever) converted into sticks to a fletcher for 16 emeralds at a time, then use those emeralds to buy bookshelves.

I am sad about the current state of the enchanting table. It used to be my favorite block just by the look and it's still the case but it's been years since the last I used it cause why gambling with random enchant when a lvl 1 librarian can give 98% of enchantment. I don't even craft a enchanting table anymore now

Isn't the crafting recipe for a book 1 leather and 3 paper, meaning if the friend had 2 leather, they didn't need to massacre the cows and the horse?
