What's the most heartbreaking thing you've ever witnessed at work?

I'm an ER nurse, and I've seen a lot of tough stuff, but this one really got to me. We got a call about a car crash victim coming in.
When the ambulance arrived, they brought in a middle-aged man. He was in really bad shape. We tried everything we could, but he was already gone when he got here. It's always hard losing a patient, but that's part of the job.
The ambulance crew had to clean up the stretcher real quick. There was blood everywhere. They barely had time to wipe it down before they got another call and had to rush out.
About half an hour later, the same ambulance brought in an old lady. She had fallen at home and hurt herself. While we were checking her out, she kept asking if we could call her son. She said he was supposed to take her to the hospital, but he never showed up. She was really worried about him.
I asked her some questions about her son, and it hit me. Her son was the man from the car crash. The one who didn't make it and she was brought in on the same gurney that her son was just laying on moments earlier.
That was a gut punch having to tell her the bad news.

I'm a teenager and a cpr, first aid certified babysitter. I've been a mother's helper for this family since January 2023. My final day of work was a few days ago. (August of 2024.) The 4th week of August, the child would start kindergarten and would no longer need me to watch her twice a week. So, throughout all of August, I crammed in as many days of work with that family, just to hang out with this girl I've started to think of as the little sister I never had. 2 years of babysitting her, almost over. I went from coming over twice a week to 3 or 4 times a week, just to see her. Switched up hours and everything.

On my last day, it was the same as any other. I surprised her with gifts, but I do that often, so that wasn't a significant change for the 5 year old. We played like normal until her mom had to take me home. She kept asking over and over when I'd see her again and "how many sleeps" until I'm back. It was heartbreaking to have to sit there quietly while her mom explained to her that I wasn't coming back. I've known her so long. She calls me "big sister". Our grandmothers are always (on separate occasions) asking about us. (Her nana asks about me, my grandma asks about her) I love that girl so much. I can't explain how much I'll miss working for her family 😢

I seen a story from a ambulance worker were he showed up to a car crash, and there was a mangeled woman in the front seat and there were toys everywhere. Turns out that the family in the car was his wife and kids and he lost both in the same night. It was heartbreaking 😭😭
