Water dish is not exclusively for drinking but most of all to maintain humidity. In the wild the humidity is always maintained because the soil is never really dry unlike in a terrarium with cocopeat it gets dry. Plus in the wild tarantula can move from lesser humidity to higher humidity if they need to unlike in captivity they don't have ability to do that and they highly rely on their keeper to maintain humidity.

my first ever tarantula died of impaction. It was heartbreaking especially because she was my first. Impaction is pretty much impossible to fix. You tried the best you could Petko I'm sorry she didn't pull through :(

It's gonna sound silly but I have given my slings a water dish in the form of a tiny seashell. Does it evaporate fast? Sure. But it gives me peace of mind when I know they're more fragile and when I can see them in premolt to know there's just that extra bit of hydration there if they need it.

The only sling who hasn't gotten a shell is my C. elegans tho  >> tiny thing that it is.

I'm sorry for your loss on your pumpkin tho, they're one of my faves and it's sad to see her go.

Impaction is such a terrible way to go for these poor critters. Some theorize it's because they molted in a too dry environment and not all of the old molt shed off the spinnerettes. By the time you notice your tarantula is sick, it's most likely too late. You did all you could.

And I actually keep water dishes in all my tarantula enclosures, even with my tiniest slings. For my really small slings I use tiny oyster half shells and they work perfectly. I also do keep their enclosures misted every other day or so to simulate rain. I haven't lost a single sling *knocks on wood*, not even my more finicky Avic slings. I honestly do think we tend to keep our tarantulas drier than they should be. Even with my Ts that prefer a more arid climate I'll at least mist them weekly and keep their water full, and overflow the dish if I see they are in pre-molt.

I think the mantis is mature as they most likely only posses wings when they are adult.

From what ive seen around impaction is rare but it normally kills after the impaction is relieved too. She was probably impacted since before you got her.
