Jaks, I agree. One caveat; if a kid is in foster care from the age of say, six months, to teens, one has a feeling of no agency at all. A kid of say 5 is at the mercy of sometimes abusive caregivers. In this instance cheating and lying becomes a tool for survival, literally. Without it one feels totally vulnerable, as the fear becomes overwhelming. I agree that as one emerges into young adulthood and gains some agency one can choose to rise above the circumstances of one’s early life. Early experiences are not an excuse for bad behaviour later on. Thanks for bringing up the topic.

It's too easy to be anonymous in social media without any consequences. If we had to spout vile face-to-face, would we?

Theft, it's wrong. But, you're homeless, starving, and can't find work. You even have kids with you who rely on you for protection. While the action is wrong. Of you had to choose between life and death or keeping your kids safe. You're going to choose survival.

Extreme situation, but the point is, is that when we think of morals and values, we do so more from a place in our life where we are essentially well off. Home, clothes, food, car, job, etc . . .

Obviously, I'm referring to food only from a store, shoplifting.

Not breaking and entertaining, holding someone at gun point, or acts of violence.

Because even in understandable desperation, lines can be crossed.

But, more to your point, yes, we know the difference between right and wrong. I look back on past actions with regret from my younger years.

But, I also understood I was a kid, growing, and learning. Many of the poor choices I made I wouldn't repeat and strive to be a better person today.

I choose kindness. No, I'm not perfect, I still make mistakes. But, I'm quicker to recognize it, accept responsibility, apologize, correct the mistake, and move on.

Egregious errors of judgment aside, we as a civilization generally strive to be and do good. Or, in the very least, try to do little to no harm.

Sadily, the ones who do choose "aggression" do far greater damage and hurt.

So, agreed, choose kindness or do the least harm. We live in an imperfect world. But we can at least choose to have a positive impact on it while we are here.
