Narrative Shared Writing Lesson- Kindergarten Writer's Workshop

Shared writing is my favorite time of the day! This is when the class is gathered together to recreate and retell something that happened in the class so everyone can participate and create a 'shared writing' together.  The students are practicing retelling a story with beginning, middle, and end and as the teacher, we are taking care of the drawing and writing for them.  

Since I needed a 'shared' experience with the kindergarteners, I told them to play "Ring Around the Rosie," with me and that would be our shared experience together.  The students were able to retell the experience and with more practice, it'll come more natural for them to retell with beginning, middle, and end.

I can't emphasize enough how important the experience should be "together" so the students can help retell the story since they were part of it. Not only does this help with oral rehearsal of a narrative story, but it will support the students in reading workshop as well.
