Watch Me BURN My PVS-14 Night Vision Tube, Then Fix It (Black-Boxing)

This upload was originally intended to be one where I conduct a fun experiment, trying to train with cheap/digital night vision (Night Fox Swift). Instead, I noticed over-saturation tube burns in the PVS-14 after about 10 minutes. Now, this video is about "black-boxing" my PVS-14 tube with hopes that the burns are temporary. Stay tuned for more content!

Man.. that digital thing is shining like a beacon to the pvs 14!

My green phos would do the same when barely turning on cold within 1-5 mins and having intense ir light into or pass the unit. The tattoo would stay for hours on end up to 2 days. But If I turn the unit on warming up for 30+ mins without looking into any intense lighting...when I do after that, the tattoos would completely fade away and the images will recover within a matter of minutes.

Since your careful of not hurting your PVS-14 I have a tip for you. Always Always keep the objective lens cover on your unit when it's not in use. The sun will destroy your tube, even if the unit is off. Someone said direct sun exposure can burn your tube in as little as 8 seconds. This burn is not repairable. There will be a black line on the image for life.

A couple of points from what I've learned. Autogating reverses the electrical potential between PC and MCP, dislodging pollutants from the MCP. It has a cleaning function. It should also be possible to "whitebox" a tube to accelerate this process. Second, unless proven otherwise, modern gen2 should be treated like an XD-4 and protected from intense sources, because the lifetime is rather short and constantly degrading. Nominal performance can be lost in as little as 2500 hours.

burned a tube filming content as well. Also, airsoft replicas are a great way to get more practice under nods.

I always keep my night vision case with my nods in the pelican case and stow em in a black storage tote all my night vision Google's and devices get stored and no light of any kind unless it's IR lights, or lasers get used with them.

I had a XD-4 wp tube with a eo tech retikle burn in that was permanent. While moving you where not able to see it. Not all burnins are the end of the world.

Do you put the Gain on max or on lowest while Blackboxing?

I did this last night with my pvs7 after looking into my bullpen lighting the tiniest slightest burn disappeared in 2 hours

When looking at bright things, it can't be stationary too long or it will get burned

What did you set your gain at when you black boxed, and does that matter?

I disagree. I have a pvs 14 gen 2 90s tube and a nvg10 digi unit and its pretty comparable and the nvg10 doesn't need IR to function like almost all digital night vision needs.
