Burkina Faso: Ibrahim Traore to Remain in Power After Junta Extends Rule | Firstpost Africa
Burkina Faso has joined neighbouring Mali in extending a junta rule. The move was announced over the weekend after a national consultation meeting was held in the capital city of Ouagadougou. The amended charter allows Burkina Faso's military leader Ibrahim Traore to stay in power for five more years. It also allows Traore to run in elections at the end of the five-year transition period. Burkina Faso, which has been covered by an army since 2022, continues to be grappled by violence from extremists while human rights groups have accused junta leaders of abuses against civilians. What would another five years under the junta look like?
