Today, I'll show you how to improve the video quality of your security cameras at night and in both color night vision and also with IR Night vision (infrared). You don't have to buy a more expensive low light or starlight night vision camera to get good footage and recordings at night. You just need to add more lighting.

Lighting is key! It is a great deterrent - our front is always lit up and once a year gangs run through various neighborhoods to go through vehicles; and I believe they avoid our house because of how well lit it is, and they can't hide under the cover of darkness.

Great advice. This is such an easy thing to overlook. Unfortunately a neighbor of mine learned this the hard way. Someone stole the tail lights off his truck. His camera didn't record the thief because the thief (huge guy) parked across the street and stayed in the shadows. We know this because a 3rd neighbor's camera did catch the guy parking at the edge of his property but we could only see a silhouette of the guy and not enough detail of the SUV he drove even after after editing the video. I have since put a light on an otherwise light-less street pole and some additional lights in the yard.

I did it my self with the ring wired video doorbell by adding more light and now it shows color footage. Thank you. 🌹🌹🌹👍👏🌹🌹🌹

I concur on adding more cameras with IR lights if possible. That's what I did and you get 2 things in one. More eyes like you said, and then the added benefit of another IR light that all cameras get to use.
Great video LH ✌️

Yup most surveillance cameras give poor image at night, the images are always at low resolution compared to their 4K specs resolution in the day, very nice to have a video on how to improve the night image of these cameras so that we can get as close as daytime, thanks for the sharing the tips👍👏💯

I've been running the Tendelux brand IR illuminators seen on amazon for most of my reolink poe cameras. %100 recommend them for increased video quality at night. Added bonus I can turn the camera's IR lights off and the bugs and spiders migrate to the illuminator and not my cameras.

That is so cool that you can buy IR lights!

Hey Hackster, would love to see if you could get your hands on some poewit lights (they are POE spotlights) and do a review of them. I think they are probably some of the best supplemental tech you can buy for CCTV and they have a POE pass through port so if you already have a ethernet run you can utilise the cable for both your camera and poe spotlight. it's very cool, I really want to try some out myself.

G'day, Lots of LED floodlights at my place, on all night every night. Now thinking of getting spotlights to illuminate further out onto the street.

I just had to come back and give you my feedback on the Reolink cameras I've tried so far with regards to lighting and video quality. At first I bought the RLC-824a which only has spotlights no ir LEDs and the picture was grainy and washed out. This is absolutely on my lighting situation and not on Reolink. So I swapped that out with the RLC-822a which only has ir LEDs and no spotlight. The picture was also grainy and washed out given my situation. So again I replaced it with a RLC -811a and it has given me the best picture and lightning quality. On the other side I put up a Duo 2 thinking the 180° angle and spotlights would be best for the situation. And it's not a bad image it's just hard to really make out any detail because everything looks so far away. And because there's nothing in-between the 2 lenses there's a dark are there. So I think I'll replace the Duo 2 with another 811a. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Another great video and information. 👍

If you have a chance can you make a video for shiwojia large PTZ cameras with 20-30x zoom 5mp or 8mp

Reolink does offer frame rate lock now. So if it's 30fps you can have it set to that at night now. Only on select cameras though with the reolink nvr only I believe

@lifehackster when it's all said and done, what do you use for your permanent mounted outside cameras? What about inside? I love your reviews, keep up the good work!

Would adding separate IR lights avoid the big issue I have where we keep getting spider's webs over the front of our cameras?

The webs don't impact the vision from the camera during the day but at night the IR lights are reflected back into the camera by the webs and you end up with a picture that is of no use, so I keep having to go around cleaning the cameras but that is a pain, takes time and often the spiders recast their webs during the night meaning half the night isn't viewable.

I can see using normal flood lights would avoid this as it would mean the IR lights are turned off on the camera, as they wouldn't be needed but I don't really want floodlights coming on and off all night where as permanent IR lights would be okay.

Also any tips in general about avoiding spider's casting their webs over the cameras?

Thanks!

@LifeHackser
Your neighbor behind you needs to quit shining the ridiculous bright spotlights into your back yard. It washes out everything you try to do. Can you add maybe 2 or 3 feet to the top of that fence to help keep the neighbors spotlights from shining in?

I'd add an IR illuminator instead of another camera. 😁 Great video, thank you. 👍🏻

Greetings from Torrance! Fantastic video! I am pretty lucky since I have a corner house, I have 2 street lights from opposite ends, giving all but one camera plenty of light. I was hoping you could recommend an IR light (possibly solar powered) and the best way to position the light. Ground level or mounted high up. More light is more better, or is it? Like you said, sometimes too much light could wash out a person's face. Would an IR light do the same? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks again!

Maybe this isn't the correct place to ask but why are the Reolink Trackmix lights out of stock so quickly after release in July??
