I'm not sure if this helps, but you're going to start from the center tombstone (the tombstone you can't interact with), and use all the direction words, ("left" "right" "up" "down" etc.), that are found in the hints to help you find the correct order to interact with the tombstones. Let's say the words you found were "left" "left down" and "up". For "left", you would simply interact with the tombstone to the left of the center tombstone. For "left down" you would go to the left of the center tombstone and then go down, so you would interact with the bottom left tombstone. Finally, for "up" you would simply go up to the tombstone above the center tombstone.

Here's a real example from the tombstone combination I got:
1) "There's no way the others could have caught me. I LEFT 'em in the dust." - to the left of the middle tombstone (left)
2) "I got UP RIGHT at the crack of
dawn just to come in second?" - up from the middle tombstone, then right (top right)
3) "It ain't RIGHT. I trained too hard
only to come in third." - to the right of the middle tombstone (right)

Edit: Here are all the tombstones associated with the direction words found in the hints:
Up - Top middle
Down - Bottom middle
Right - Middle right
Left - Middle left
Up left - Top left
Up right - Top right
Down left - Bottom left
Down right - Bottom right

**If you aren't sure about your phrases, you can search "Climbing contest cuphead fandom" and the first result, (cuphead . fandom . com), lists all the phrases with the associated direction from the center grave stone. If you are still stuck, reply and I will attempt to help you with this puzzle.

For those confused it’s all random what I did to reset is talk to the ghost then went back for the code and also click A on the front of the gravestone for the ghosts to pop up

1st Place: I may have won, But I don't look down on anyone for trying to compete.

2nd Place: I left downtown in a hurry, and forgot my gear. I'll settle for second.

3rd Place: Third Place? I guess things can only go up from here!

Answer: Bottom Middle, Bottom Left, Top Middle
