I Wish I Had Done This Sooner

Today we build a DIY roadside firewood stand at the bottom of our driveway to sell firewood in. We’ll sell bundles as well as loose stacks of firewood. Initial material cost was $60 but we had to go back for metal roofing and the locking mailbox and a few other miscellaneous items. Total cost was about $120

We live in the information age. I suggest posting a QR code or Venmo ID, Paypal or Square address someone can pay you with on their phone if they simply don't have cash with them. It's about convenience. Don't dismiss any opportunity to collect money physically or digitally. A prepared seller is a successful seller.

I'm Australian, my girlfriend is from Colorado. When she came here for the first time and we drove through the bush she was amazed that people just leave piles of firewood and bags of manure by the roadside with signs that just say "$5 a bag" "$2 a bag" "$15 per stack of 20" and old buckets on fence posts and ice cream containers weighed down with rocks as money boxes. She asked why aren't they worried about theft, and I'm not sure but I think most people wouldn't travel hours out of town just to steal a bag of horse shit.

We had some theft this winter. Got the guy n his plate on camera. He has done it 2x. Never contacted the 🚔 but did print out him doing it n stapled his picture where he was taking it from. 3days later he stopped for another trunk load n decided not too. I like helping ppl. Yes keep us updated! Here’s the thing I see from where I live the city folk will buy wood like this because they have an event or something going on. I had a neighbour when I lived in the city I burnt wood for heat he just burnt wood for looks. Every time he had a party he would come over and buy one wheel barrow full of wood from me for 20$ so I think it’s a great idea to set up a stand

For the money, a local guy has a steel tube cemented in the ground with a slot, and a huge lock with deterrents around it. The wood walking might be slightly okay, the money walking is not okay.

Just a minor observation. Next time you attach a corrugated roof, try drilling through the peaks rather than valleys. The grommet will stop most leaks anyway, but best having rain draining away from the fixing, down a clear channel. Your wood won't mind the odd drip, or you could flip the sheeting over to get the conventional arrangement.

My boys and I built a stand modeled after yours on this video. We have had it up for about a month. We have sold a cord of wood so far. We live in an area of the Hocking hills in southern Ohio that has a lot of cabin rentals. We were surprised at the amount of wood that has moved so far. We do 1 cu ft bundles for $5.00 and 4.5 cu ft stacks for $20.00.

We have something similar in Germany. You can find small fields of different flowers growing along the roadside with a small money box and no prices. You just pick them and pay as much as you think is ok for the amount you took. You need some trust to offer somthing like that but since I see them every now and then they seem to pay off.

Looks great bud but you will need a lot heavier duty money box. Trust me from my experience with my vegetable stand. They’ll pry it open and destroy it or pry it off and take the whole box. Just speaking from experience. Weld one up out of heavy gauge steel with a big lock on it and lag it to the stand. It doesn’t matter that it’s only a few bucks it’s your time that they’re stealing. Good luck with the firewood sales though and it looks great!
