Geely, a Chinese car brand, has become a major player in the market today. A few months ago, our channel shared with you the story of Geely's acquisition of Aston Martin. Today's Geely looks promising, but few people really understand the hardships behind the acquisition of Volvo back then. In order to break through those barriers, Geely’s founder, Li Shufu, actually bet his entire company and his life on it. No matter how shocking you feel after listening to this story, it will not be more shocking than what Li felt when he first came to the United States in the 90s and looked at the traffic on the street. At that time, he said, "We should also build cars and sell them abroad".

During the conversation with the union members, Li was asked the question, "Many people are interested in Volvo, can you describe in three words what is the advantage of Geely?"

Although he had drafted the question many times before, Li was a bit caught off guard by the "three words". Faced with many eyes resting on him, Li had an idea and used the three English words he could speak that instantly captured the hearts of many union members: "I Love You." The president of the union at the Ghent plant immediately took the Volvo emblem and put it on Li.

About a month after returning from Hangzhou, 13 executives and union members from Volvo came to Geely's Ningbo production base. The visit went well, and Volvo verified Geely's capabilities on the ground and expressed satisfaction. At the evening dinner in Shanghai, many of them grabbed a photo with Li. Their basic attitude towards Geely's acquisition of Volvo was "no objection".

Geely saved Volvo from the scrapheap as everything American car companies touch, dies.

Volvo car division was a sinking ship. The profitable Volvo truck division was tired of keeping the car division afloat. Ford’s CEO Nassar wanted a diverse portfolio of cars brands as Ford has been essentially reduced from three to one brand — the Lincoln and Mercury were damaged brands beyond repair. Nassar bought Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, and Volvo — all legacy fixer-upper brands. They were all money black-holes. First, Ford family kicked Nassar to the curb, then frantically wanted to stop the cash burn. Ford luckily escaped death when Geely wanted to buy the choking yoke around Ford’s neck. Tata bought Jaguar and Rover. A Middle East private equity bought Aston Martin and tried to resuscitate the brand, but failed.

It's sad it's gone to China. But you know if they develop and build Volvo then surely it must be for the best. I've owned Volvo and also Saab cars and they are great motors but here in the UK Volvo are now classed as luxury or executive cars. So because of our tax system keeping one on the road is prohibitive. If they can develop a car to compete in the lower emission class I think they would be onto a winner.

I really want to buy Volvo, but after the acquisition I am a bit hesitant! Some of comments seem to suggest that Volvo's soul is still a live and the quality and safety are still there! However, I have bad experience with one chinese cars and do not want to have the same nightmare again!!
Any suggestions?

But I love Chuanfu and Elon!
Don't worry. I don't hate Shufu.
I simply hate Mary who abandoned Thailand and Thai people too suddenly in Feb 2020!
Fire Mary out and bring GM EVs to Thailand! We want western EVs!

Volvo is no more the original Swedish Volvo; the Chinese Volvo lost its image in the market.
