Emmanuel Macron’s summation of Brexit: ‘The British people were sold a lie’

The 'first losers are the British people,' French president Emmanuel Macron said, speaking before Tuesday night's Brexit deal defeat. He went on to cast doubt over any chances the European Union would renegotiate Britain's exit deal: 'We already went as far as we could.' Speaking in Normandy not long before Britain's parliament voted 432-202 against the proposed divorce deal, the French leader said the British people had been manipulated into voting for something that didn't actually exist. He wished the country's representatives 'good luck' in figuring out a way to leave the EU on 29 March without a clear plan

Can't understand the downvotes, what he said was 100% factual.
You may not like the guy, but everything he said here was correct.

Brexit happened because the EU refused to listen to David Cameron when he first went to the European parliament seeking some concessions and flexibility from the EU. People in the UK saw the EU being entirely ineffective in dealing with migrants trying to get into Europe where UK, Germany, Holland, Sweden were the countries most sought after by the migrants. Nothing wrong with immigrants and controlled and appropriate migration but what they got was no control and in fact active facilitation of migrants with Italy in particular being left to its own devices with minimal EU help. The EU is also seen as expansionist and to a significant degree led and controlled by Germany and so it is becoming less democratic. Here Macron is displaying no capacity for introspection and he wants to convey a notion that the brexiters sought to deceive the British people as if everyone was uncritical of the EU.

We can clearly see that Macron knows what is best for a country. I'm surprised he hasn't resigned yet.

Yes we were sold a lie. When we joined a common market and ended up with so much more that would never, ever have passed a public vote.

Absolute shame that our own government doesn’t see the disgusting shambles this whole ordeal is leaving and will leave the country in. And yet it is clear to so many others...

The British people Voted to leave. It means we want to leave the EU. We are all old enough to know what being controlled by th EU means. We have no voice. We want to go. We will go. That is how democracy works. There is no other way. Unless we are dictated to by the EU or Remainers.Who lost the vote. ! Democracy must go on. Or we wil be under a Dictatorship. The government must do what the people

Everyone knows the French government along with the dictators in Brussel are going to put as many obstacles in the way as they can muster to stop brexit. I hope and pray the British government and the British people step up to the plate and see this thing though.

How can anyone listen to the words this man says.. I think he needs to focus on his own country.

No body lied to me because I didn’t listen to the politicians on either side with their axes to grind. I voted aged 28 to leave based on watching the way this country has changed during my childhood, teens and 20s. I’m not 60, I’m not far right, I’m not racist, I’m not any thing else remain would like to call me because they lost the vote. I’m a hard working class 31 year old and I’m sick of the way we’ve lost control of our country.

It would be very helpful if comments here discussed what macron said instead of what his approval ratings are or how riots are in Paris. He is right on point and I can understand that raw truth hearts.

Unlike any other member state the UK exports far more outside of the EU than in. And to expand on that further, much of what the UK's exports to Europe, is actually heading outside of the EU via Rotterdam, but counted as an EU import.

The UK is a big importer from the EU, and pays a huge price in terms of membership fees, and financing of EU institutions. Strip away those payments, strip away the tariffs on imports from outside the EU, and the UK is in a very enviable position.

If we had this conversation twenty years ago, things would be very different. However the world has changed and Asia is where the action is, and Asia can furnish the UK with its needs, and is in a position to offer balanced bilateral trade.

Take a look around your homes, and your factories, and your offices, and you will find your goods are from outside the EU in most cases.

For food, the UK has the ability to be self sufficient, however it may well be the case its cheaper to import from outside the EU.

The EU will always have the ability to trade with the UK in fair balanced trade, however there will never be free trade as we know it today, as that free trade is not free at all, it comes with huge financial costs of which the public have had enough.

The people are sick and tired of paying the elites membership fees and leaving the EU will ensure the working classes reap the rewards of independence.

Seems like I'm one of the few non-Russian trolls because despite his unpopularity and some problems in his country, he is right what he is saying. The chaos brexit is causing is nothing compared to some guys in yellow jackets.
