For a few years I was a professional picture frame builder of highest quality and tightest tolerance work. The end results looked fabulous; but behind the swinging double doors of my shop area, it was nothing but high speed, high pressure production work using limited tools in a quick and dirty manner. Now, today, when I work with tools it is as a retired hobbyist; and I'm much more relaxed and happier for that.

In high school I actually was working on commissions for desks and tables. Now I just build stuff I need that I don’t want to spend a lot on. My table, coffee table, sword display, book shelf, tv stand, computer desk and cutting board collectively cost me maybe 300 dollars to build. They would have cost 2k for lower quality and I could easily make 3k selling all of them. I went from doing commission in high school, realized I hate woodworking if it’s for money, and now just build stuff I need or if I wanna make a gift for someone

Well as a 25 year old professional furniture maker I watch your vids and have multiple old tools that can do the job that a lot of new power tools can't do

How about being both?
Power tool finish carpenter as a day job and hand tool collector craftsman on weekends. 🤙🏼

I would consider myself a hobbyist woodworker, but a professional tool collector.

My 8yo daughter said the other day that I’m the best woodworker because of my desk.

To clarify, my “desk” is an oversized Moravian stool (no sliding dovetail, just screwed batterns) that I made as fast as I could after my new monitor arm punched a hole in the ikea desk, and the wooden legs were a last minute idea (I was going to use the original IKEA legs) that are all at slightly different angles, and the top, while flat, has rather more tear out than I’d like.

But I branded it with my name stamp, and the idea that it might inspire her and her brother to give things a go make me happy too. Rather a different set of success criteria.

Fun fact the term “hobbyhorse”comes from the description of a small to medium horse that moved at a gentle pace. Later “hobby” would describe the past time that one would do at a gentle pace. Almost the opposite of a profession where you move at a fast pace. So this explanation is relevant on many levels even your pun is relevant. Bravo

I can tell you I'm not the only professional who still watches hobbyist YouTube videos. Everyone has something to teach you

I'm also a professional and a hobbyist! The things I've learned from my hobby do come in handy sometimes though

I've been paid to build houses, but does that make me a professional "wood worker"? Due to disabilities, I can barely do hobby woodworking anymore, but I still enjoy it until I hurt too bad to continue. But the videos keep me entertained between time in the shop. So, thanks for what you and other tubers do.

Ummmm. I am a professional, albeit retired.. Thing is, I am not so arrogant as to think I can't learn anything from the select few You Tube Woodies I

If that is a Stanley #1, that would make me happy too.

It bothers me so much when people say “oh I don’t have a domino so I can’t make that…”. Yes you absolutely can!! The domino makes things faster and easier. If you’re a hobbyist speed and ease should be low on the priority list. Use dowels if you aren’t into traditional joinery.
