My Hero Academia has finally come to an end with chapter 430 and in todays video I’ll explain what’s good about the ending what’s bad about the ending and my thoughts on whether the story reached it’s full potential. On a personal level, 5 years ago my first video was a crappy review of chapter 234, since MHA was the first series where I’d watched the anime and felt like I had to read ahead to find out what happens next. For me this lead to a domino effect where I began reading ahead for other series as well like Black Clover and Attack on Titan, so personally My Hero Academia was a super important gateway manga and without it this channel probably wouldn’t exist. Now when it comes to the ending, my honest initial reaction was just sympathy for Deku like I genuinely felt bad for how his life turned out after graduation.
As a quick recap for those of you that might not’ve seen the ending, the final chapter begins with Midoriya in his 20s having now become a teacher at UA. Unlike the rest of his classmates who’ve grown up to become famous heroes, Deku is quirkless, as it’s implied that the embers of One For All disappeared around the time of his graduation. In the 8 years since then society has changed a lot, with people learning from the mistakes they made with Shigaraki and reaching out to help each other. On top of that, thanks to Ochaco more kids now have access to quirk counselling, with the heroes essentially trying to prevent kids like Toga from becoming outcasts in society. Overall these initiatives lead to a decrease in the amount of villains, meaning the amount of heroes needed these days isn’t as much as it used to be. For that reason, teenagers don’t all want to become heroes like in the old days, instead we see a classroom of kids who aspire to become doctors or work in the world of technology. However when it comes to Dai, he’s one of the few kids that holds on to the dream of becoming a pro hero, even though it’s more difficult now than it was before. As the chapter progresses we see Deku walking home after his 9-5 job, admitting that since graduation it’s been hard to meet up with his friends, given that their schedules never seem to line up. During this scene, the background shows that Tokoyami and Inivisible Girl have their own merchandise for sale, implying that on top of being famous they’re also pretty rich as well. From Midoriya’s perspective although he’s happy for everyone’s success he does confess that he misses being a hero but without a quirk, the next best thing he can do is inspire others to reach that dream. That’s why when he bumps into Dai he encourages him to do his best, in a moment that parallels what All Might said to him 10 years ago. Speaking of All Might he’s still alive and in the final moments of the chapter, the former number 1 hero reveals he has a special gift. Over the last few years he’s been working with Melissa Shield and Hatsume, to create an iron man suit, similar to what he wore during the final war. This suit was funded by Bakugo and the rest of Deku’s old classmates and in the final panel, we see that after all this time Midoriya has rejoined them as a pro hero.
Having had some time to think about this ending I made a list of the good and the bad and in the interests of positivity lets start by talking about what worked. Firstly the impact that Deku had on society was amazing, cause from the beginning he was one of the few true heroes who wasn’t in it for money or fame or legacy, he legit only wanted to reach out and help people, and this mindset is something that’s now been adopted by everyone. The best example of this is how on the first page, one of Deku’s students, is the same guy who was locked in the basement by his own family for years. In the past this type of mistreated outcast would’ve had potential to become the next Shigaraki but thanks to the example that Midoriya set, he wasn’t ignored by society in the same way as Tenko.
