How To Blend Acrylic Paint That's DRIED! 3 Easy Ways ✔️

Hello and welcome to The Gold Coast Art School channel!

Blending acrylic paints can be tricky. You want to get that smooth, even finished look. Something seamless! But what happens if the paint has already dried? What if you have a hard edge that you hate and want to cover up? These three methods can be used to blend your acrylics. They will give you different results, and you need to consider which is best for your specific subject matter. What is the final look you want? I'd recommend testing these out for yourself before you work on your painting! Not only so you can see for yourself, but to practice and feel comfortable before approaching your final work.

The key really with all of these is layering. Go lightly, and build up the layers depending on what you need. Acrylic paints dry so quickly, and you can use a hair dryer between your layers too if you want to quicken the process.

➤ A little more about The Gold Coast Art School:
Since 1995, we've been teaching creatives how to successfully paint and draw (even when they think they can't!) We have classes for beginners and intermediates, and welcome advanced artists too. Many of our students love coming to our school not only for the depth of knowledge our tutors bring to each session, but for our relaxed and welcoming community feel. Our adult art students usually use oil paints, but we encourage any medium, including acrylics, pastels and watercolours. Check out our social media and website for info, or email/call us any time to chat to Jess and book your spot in our next class!

I would love more on acrylics. I worked for many years in oils but have a chronic illness that she can't support that anymore so I've had to switch to acrylics and I feel like a beginner again. It's a totally different beast but even harder to learn because I keep wanting to work them like oils! So, yes please! More of this!

If you're having trouble with blending a light colour onto a dark one, mixing an intermediate hue between the two and laying that down first can help. For very smooth transitions (and if if you've got all day) you can build up multiple intermediate stages and glaze over an extremely thin wash of the target colour over the top. Probably works better on smaller pieces to be honest...

Ufff they all look very bad, honestly you have to blend while it is still damp, once it has dried up you can try but it will never look as good as with wet paint.
