I really disagree with people dunking on the design of Voltorb and Electodude. They're cool. The natural extension of the JRPG tradition of mimics in the Pokemon games where item chests are depicted as poke balls.

i think Voltorb's design is a cute play on classic fantsy rpg trope of mimics - given in the games pokeballs are also resource chests in the overworld if you think about it

I'm pretty sure Giovanni 3 has Good AI so you were actually guaranteed the victory once you knocked out Nidoking because it could only select Fissure.

The tide really turned when you were able to mimic psychic. Just goes to show how much Voltorb's move pool holds it back. If it could learn any decent non-electric special attack it would be pretty good!

Worth noting: while Light Screen might have helped against Sabrina, Venusaur’s auto-crit Razor Leaf completely ignores screens so it wouldn’t have helped against the rival.
