Because the best students in France are not in research courses (academic universities), but in the field of engineering (ESPECIALLY AERONAUTICS, quantum computing, military and oil industries and quantum finance)... If all French engineering students were really interested in research in physics and chemistry, Nobel prizes would rain down like never before.

It is amazing that Iran has 2, taking its econ etc situation into consideration. Even more amazingly, one of them is female (although passed away, tragically).

It's interesting that France has so many field medals, but in terms of Nobel prizes it seems so focused on literature, not that much in physics or in chemistry. Maths seems an exception in the realm of science, in which France excels. Otherwise, literature and arts seem predominant.

Russia really got a lot from 1994 to 2010. From the break up of the USSR and before the Crimea.

Yau Shing Tung’s nationality by then was British Hong Kong, definitely not Chinese. His mathematical career by then had nothing to do with China.

It's interesting to me that Iran is the only third world country that has two Fields Medal winners

Artur Avila is actually 100% brazilian, he was born in Rio de Janeiro, and completed all his higher education in Brazil including his PhD. He is only naturalized French because he worked there as a researcher and is now a professor in Zurique, but he has no ethnic connection to France.
