It's always better to clear things up. The waiter should've apologized and explain everything instead of being silent. Those ladies understood the situation and didn't get upset, but what if they did misunderstand it? This misunderstanding could've ruined their day.

I’m a nurse and my colleague who loves kids looked at a black couples baby and said his a cute monkey isn’t he. I felt my heart stop the family took their kid away from her and I had to take her to aside and do damage control.
I hope I am never in that situation again

As someone who has word vomit often, especially when serving, sometimes it’s best to just leave it and not bring it up again because what you say to explain could just make it worse. In all honesty, any kind of explanation could very well have been misconstrued or taken as an excuse to get away with being racist. She showed her embarrassment and those ladies could tell more from her embarrassed/shamed silence than any explanation could have.

It’s wild being a non American and hearing things like this. 1) most of the world doesn’t use ‘black and white’ to refer to people and 2) it’s weirdly common for people to call all bouncy children that climb and are super active monkeys. It’s not an insult anywhere else and most people actually call their own children monkeys, as a playful thing. Atrocious how it’s implied in America which I’m sorry to people experiencing that.
