As an American I have to admit that there are a huge amount of stereotypes Americans have when they think of British people. Today I am very excited and a little bit nervous to hear about what exactly Brits think of when they think about the stereotypical American. The "Dumb American" is a stereotype all over the world . Sadly it's mostly thanks to your education system, that is very American centred. Many don't know, where other countries are in the world. They have no idea about what is going on in the rest of the world. A friend in the US was asked by schoolmates, when they got to know, that my friend had friends in Germany, if they have fridges in Germany. My friend told them: your parents drive a Mercedes, a GERMAN car. Or you have the questions like: Is Hitler still alive, is the wall still standing and so on. My friend, who grew up in the bible belt, had those tests in school about the world being 6000 years old and dinosaurs living at the same time as humans. Of course they got purity rings as well.

And sadly it's getting worse, especially if you think about what is going on in Florida right now, one ridiculous bill about education after the other. Text books that don't talk about the colour of Rosa Parks skin anymore, because CRT!
Girls not being allowed to talk about menstruation. While other districts want to know, when girls are on their period, else they can't join a sports club.

Even educated and good people fall into the American centred views.
No, you are not Irish or Italian, when your family came over to the US 100+ years ago.
You are American with Irish or Italian ancestors, it's your heritage, not your identity. I would give 1st gen a pass, but if it was your grandparents, no, your are American.

It annoys people in other countries to be honest. It's not something people in other countries really do. Especially when you have on the other hand the American first mindset, the US is the best country in the world idea.

That's why people think, Americans are stupid.

Our Britishness wouldn't allow the people in the video to say what they really thought,

Some are arrogant, loud, think they are the greatest country on planet earth, most are positive, friendly, lovely people .

I think many Americans are proud to be American and while abroad speak loudly to let everyone around to know they are American.

One of the first things we learn about Americans is from American Cop shows and movies. The fifth Amendment gives them the right to remain silent. Of course we quickly learn that very few of them seem to have the ability to do so.

I was in the British Museum a couple of days ago... And the Americans 'dominated' the voices in VERY packed areas. So yes, they are LOUD and DO stand out in a crowd ! Also the 'majority' could have been considered a bit overweight (although to be fair, several British people were easily competing with them in that department). 😂🇬🇧

One of my brother’s best friends from uni came to visit. He is from NJ and a lovely lovely guy but he is also quite loud. We all went out for Sunday lunch and people on other table ls were rolling their eyes…bless him. He is a superstar 😂

can I say, there seems to be a spat of these type of videos, comparing US/UK culture.. but you have such an open mind and always present them with a positive attitude to learning and understanding.. which makes for interesting viewing..

The blonde lady who said about the American left being very left and the right, very right is spot on with that. And you, Tyler being surprised we Brits know as much, or are as interested in American politics as we are is because, unlike a lot of American's, we know there is a big wide world outside of your borders, and what happens in a great deal of American politics affects the rest of the world. I've lost count of the number of discussions/arguments I've had with American friends on social media, "oh you're just a Brit, you should learn to keep your nose out of things that don't concern you, American politics is only for us American's" and I generally reply to that with something along the lines of " you're so unbelievably wrong there, yes, predominantly your politics affects you initially, but just like everything else American, sooner or later it starts affecting the rest of the world to a greater or lesser degree, depending on how much of an ally or enemy America is to that country" but because so many America's are so insular and truly believe they are the only people on the planet, they do not ever realise that what American does or doesn't do, will affect everyone else sooner or later

It’s very important you don’t conflate London with Britain in general. Two very different entities. When she mentioned people not talking to each other she was specifically and rightfully referring to London. Everywhere else in Britain is very different. In Scotland for instance there’s places some people won’t leave you alone.

I think most people take an interest in American politics, because when when America sneezes the rest of us catch a cold.

On the whole I've got on really well with Americans in the US. I love the friendliness, hospitality and openness. However, I choose my associates carefully, and I have certainly seen some of the less savoury aspects of Americans - I don't count all of the stereotypes in the video as negative. Sometimes the friendliness can be a bit overwhelming and the loudness is definitely noticeable as soon as you land.
The traits I least like are complete and comical ignorance of other cultures, and the concept that the US is the best country in the world by a huge margin (though most of my friends did not espouse this view).

I went to work on a summer camp in New York state in 1980. I had to make a phone call on my first day and didn't have any change so went into an office building to ask for some change from $10. The lady heard my accent and asked me to say something again in English .

No one talking to each other in London is a common thing. So I'd understand that woman getting lonely. It's entirely different in the North of England though. To the point where people talk to you so much in the street, it can be annoying.

Just for fun, I asked my two oldest kids, then aged 11 and 9, what stood out for them when comparing their new US classmates with those at the schools they attended before our six-year sojourn in US. They said that their new mates in DC were: naïve, unadventurous, "rather undisciplined", and had poor writing skills. Out of the mouths...🤔🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️ My daughter summed it up well, " The US is a bit like one's unsophisticated baby brother."

Tyler, you asked when we hear an American accent do we (here in the U.K.) reciprocate like you guys do. The answer is we notice, but we don’t go out to impose ourselves on you. I guess the reason being as we’re so close to other foreign countries we are just used to it. That’s no just London, that’s all over the U.K. so it’s not unusual to come across different cultures and languages.

Don't worry about this, I come from a part of the UK that others think are stupid as well. When I was at university there was a comment in the bar that Americans are loud as there was a table full of them being loud. I was sitting opposite another American who looked at me an grinned.
If I see them locally on holiday, they always say hello and are nice so I reply and say that I hope they enjoy the rest of their holiday.
I like them as they are like anyone else. You get good and bad in each country.
