I might have to pick up the Essex Serpent now. I am not a fan of historical fictions so I never picked it up even though it was highly recommended to us. But this sounds a little more fun. Thank you for the different perspective on the story.

Leftover Women sounds really interesting! And I think I've heard enough people raving about Isabel Greenberg that I might finally have to pick up one of her books!

I read The Essex Serpent in March as well and I feel the same way. You really do just get so invested. I loved it.

Great video Lauren - it was so refreshing to see someone do a review of The Essex Serpent that wasn't bubblingly positive! You've inspired me to carry on with it because I started it ages ago and just couldn't be less bothered so to hear that you felt that way too but then it got better was very refreshing and inspiring!
Thank you for some great reviews! :-)

Ooh I think I might really like A Manual for Cleaning Women from how you described it. Also I know very little about how China operates so was interesting, though really scary, to get that small glimpse. Think I should definitely read Leftover Women but can imagine that frustration of not being able to change anything. And I love the hair! ♡ Welcome to the fringe club ha x

I remember you mentioned on Twitter that you got bangs, they really suit you! :)
Anyway, Leftover Women sounds very interesting, if I can use this word in this context...
And oh my god, the cover of The Essex Serpent!! So beautiful ♥

Just stumle across this video, and as a Chines woman who was born and raised, and now is 28 and living in China, I must say though I haven't read the Leftover Woman, the things you mentioned in this book are definitely present and true in modern China. It is both infuriating and frustrating. Women have to face the pressure to marry before certain age or the society would treat them as "unqualifed and problematic". It is quite desperate.

Leftover Women sounds really interesting - I've just added it to my wishlist. I've had The Essex Serpent for a few months now and still haven't picked it up, I must get around to it. I think I've been a bit more reluctant because I read her debut novel earlier in the year and didn't really like it. Lindsi xx

Leftover Women sounds fascinating but quite depressing/enraging. I really want to read A Manual for Cleaning Women. I love a wry book. Phew, thank goodness you liked The Essex Serpent and we can still be friends and you can still come and visit. The Encyclopedia of Early Earth is wonderful isn't it? I want a new Greenberg now. Ps. LOVING. THE. HAIR.

Wow. Leftover Women sounds both crazy and really fascinating! I really loved The Encyclopedia of Early Earth when I first read it, but when I went back to read it a second time, it wasn't as captivating, or maybe it was just me! Who knows! Hope you have fun with the Bailey's Prize :D <3

A very interesting video Lauren! I think you should read Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier which is a historical novel about fossil hunting in England in the early 19th century. It is absolutely fascinating and all of Tracy Chevalier's novels are brilliant I think !

I have that same feeling, the need to finish things in a certain time and if it takes forever to finish a book, despite me reading a lot it frustrates me. Stupid, but what can we do?

Thanks Lauren. Great review video as always. The Essex Serpent, so much hype in YouTube. Your review reminded me of The Lie Tree. I don't enjoy The Lie Tree. Should I not pick this one up? Would you share your thoughts please?

I definitely want to pick up forgotten women, reading One Child at the moment about the one child policy so I can feel a China kick coming on : )
