"I'm bad at piano"
"oh, how often do you practice"
"I don't really"

There are only bad and uninspiring math teachers. We need more teachers like you sir.

About a year ago, my school didn’t allow me to take a precal class over the summer. That made me think “You know what…I don’t need school, ” and I taught myself precal AND calculus out of spite. My love for math exploded then, I watch people like you daily, and do problems for fun. I’m almost grateful my school didn’t let me take that class

I'm from India, here people spend almost their entire education life preparing for exams starting from JEE to GATE and GRE and ever further, people dont even care whether they are good or bad like or dislike , all they know that cracking the exam is all that matters so they practice hand and crack the exams and get away with it, but I feel like exam preparation is completely different from learning stuff and things need to be changed

As an engineer with a knack for

0. deriving equations to model real life scenarios,

I still think I'm bad at math because:

1. I can't do everyday arithmetic in my head. I have terrible number sense. Prefer a calculator
2. I'm terrible at SOLVING equations, especially integrals and differential equations. Prefer using MATLAB

As an engineer, what skill will I need the most? 0

What skills am I being graded for? 1 & 2

Hate being that guy but the problem is with the system

learning math seems a lot like learning a musical instrument, but most people don't seem to think of it as a skill but rather as some innate feature, like having 5 fingers. If you don't practice, you're not going to be good at math just like you won't be good at oboe if you never study the instrument... but people don't seem to think of it that way. If they never practice an instrument, they don't have the expectation that they should ever be good at it. It seems different with math, at least in the Western world. it's very odd.

bad news: you're bad at math. good news: It's your fault.

100% agree. I feel like a lot of students need to hear this. We often try to generalize some negative experiences with a particular topic to the big picture ideas at play. One of the things I enjoy most about math is that it forces us to be ok with making mistakes since we learn something new with every mistake we recognize. I'm so grateful for the awesome content you create 🙂.

Thank you, Professor, for your hindsight.
When you said that in struggling there is a possibility for growth, I couldn’t help but see myself in your words. In high school I used to leave most of my tests blank, because I didn’t know the answers. My scores were around 15/100. Desperate, I didn’t know what to do, because I didn’t understand a thing. I tried to study the last topics, but I couldn’t understand them without the previous topic, which I couldn’t understand without the previous topic to the previous topics. At last, I started reading my textbook from the first page on, and everything started to make sense, to click into place.
From that day on, I have always been the best math student in my High School Classes.
Fast forward to many years, I am now becoming a mathematician, thinking about specializing in Algebraic Topology or Differential Geometry, and I am also a teacher myself.
I tried to get from my High School the original tests of mine, to show my students that I was worse than they will ever be, and they remain shocked.
And you are totally right: I always them, that unless they have a mental impairment, there is no such thing as “bad at math”. I have never ever seen a student who was actually bad at math. There are only students who study the right way and those who don’t.

wierd how people always make it a point to say they can't do math or science or whatever they're talking about. I feel like someone along their way lied to them and told them it was too difficult for them, and they believed it.

Biggest true that has ever been trued. I was flunking math in the elevnth grade, and truly believed to my core that i sucked. So my grandma decided to pay for some tutoring, and after a year and a half of hard work, alot of guidance from my tutor, carefully building my foundation correctly, i ended high school with a perfect score on my final (in portugal, its alot more advanced math than highschool in the states). I fell in love with mathematics, and discovered I am really good at it. Any1 can develop a productive and enjoyable relationship with math. It takes daily work (not too much though), and good guidance from a good teacher(s).

You made me a Mathematician❤️

I swear you did because I believe that I am and this has led me to understand Real Analysis, Calculus and Computer Science in a great way, Linear Algebra is ofcourse a by-add as well!

Thank You so much!

Besides everything else, Dr. Trevor, you are an excellent teacher. You make the connections and tie things together.

Exactly my thoughts. I've never met someone who was bad at any academic subject. They just had never been presented the concept in a sequence that accounted for what they as a person already knew. Love your channel professor Bazett!

Good to hear right now! Currently struggling a great deal with accelerated Calc IV and Complex Analysis. Your vector calculus series has been really useful! Have you considered doing Complex Analysis?

As someone with Dyscalculia this sounds like someone saying to a blind person: "You are not really blind, you just have to open your eyes".
