Mazda has finally taken the wraps off of the long-awaited RX-9, a sports car that they hope will bring back the famous rotary engine era. No need to worry about the RX-8's strange four-door design. The RX-9 looks like a dangerous animal ready to attack.

The RX-9 is based on the beautiful Mazda Vision GT concept car. It has a low, sharply creased body that screams speed. The long hood flows smoothly into the fastback back end, which is framed by aggressive LED headlights that go across the whole width of the car. It is said that the famous pop-up headlights will be back on future RX models, but in a cleaner, more modern style. The outside of the RX-9 is a mix of form and function. Some aerodynamic features, like a front splitter, sculpted side skirts, and a rear diffuser, are subtle but bold. They work together to create downforce and make the car easier to handle at high speeds. Deep, multi-spoke wheels give you a hint of how powerful the engine is, and the car's low center of gravity makes it even more focused on speed.

The most important question about the RX-9 was what was inside. There aren't many details available yet, but reports say Mazda has perfected a new rotary engine they've named the "Skyactiv R-Engine." This new breed of rotary engines should be better at using fuel and releasing less pollution than older models. It's also thought to have a thrilling amount of power, with a high-revving 450-horsepower engine paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox that shifts smoothly. The RX-9 is also said to have a nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution, which is said to improve speed and responsiveness even more.

The price of the 2025 Mazda RX-9 will represent the fact that it is a high-end sports car. Early figures put the MSRP at around $80,000, which is about the same as other cars in its class, like the Nissan Z Nismo and the Toyota GR Supra. Mazda is likely to set up a ticket system to handle demand, so there will likely be a limited number of cars available. The public reveal is set for the end of this year, and deliveries will start in early 2025.
