"The flux" is slang for dysentery, which during this time was commonly got in England through bathing in unsanitary conditions. Sailors such as Blackthorne would avoid bathing since ship life tended to lack hygiene and clean water.

He is the perfect cast for a foreigner that is desperate to live. I was watching episode 3 a while ago and the look he has all the time is pitiful but also respectable because he is so focused to survive.

I appreciate those in the comments pointing out that it was extremely common to catch diseases like dysentery while bathing in Europe from unclean water which is why they avoided bathing for longer periods of time. Japan had an abundance of clean water sources unfit for drinking ( hot springs) so bathing was much more routine there. The same can be seen of the Scandinavians who had the same situation.

Fun fact: The Aztecs first encounter had them bringing incenceto burn while meeting with European sailors. The bad smell was a sailor thing probably.

Kind of funny how after spending time with the Japanese people and developing thier ritual of bathing. In episode 8 he immediately commented on how bad his countrymen smelled when meeting them after so long a separation. The smell was so bad he tried to leave before he was recognized.😂

I love how this show has these little tidbits of historical accuracy but never focuses too much on them. Really adds to the setting.

Having lived in Japan and experienced their onsens, the Japanese are very serious about their baths. While in the West, people normally see baths as an occasional, even rare luxury, the Japanese see it as an everyday ritual.

Edit: BATHS, not showers. There is a difference. The Japanese use showers to get clean, while the bath is solely for relaxation and healing. They forbid using the bath to get clean, people have been banned from onsen for not showering before getting into the bath and they will drain the whole onsen for it.

I love how in Episode 8 he realizes how bad they all stink and yet the polite Japanese put up with it
