I feel like learning the fretboard is one of the hardest parts of guitar because we learn guitar in a way that we don't have to know what the notes actually are until we hit that wall when we do. My musical journey started out with trombone. On trombone you know how and where to play low notes you know where the high notes are and you just have to change the note with your lips. Piano is just all laid out for the eyes to see where everything is in order but guitar is just something else. Many ways to do the same thing, many places to play the same note

I found mapping out the low E and A strings, by playing bar chords constantly helped a lot too.

This is a great tip.. learning these octave shapes is a very good place to begin. Using the dot/block markers on the fingerboard in conjunction with this will also massively help as visual aids so the player can instantly and easily locate visually say a D played on the A string at the 5th fret etc.. 👌🏽👌🏽

Shapes will fail you ultimately though. Learn the notes on each string independent of the others. Play scales on one string. Play arpeggios on one string. Play the same note on each of the strings without using patterns or shapes.

THAT is the best way.
