Went to my parents' house last weekend to discover that we now have a bee hive to produce our own honey. When I asked my dad about it, he told me the bees are dying off around the world and he wants to do his part. When I asked him why they were dying or how the honey production works he told me to stop asking questions. But at least he's trying. They kind of feel like pets. Much less scary when they are there on purpose. Also, free honey.

*note to self: add honeybee farm to list of apocalypse bunker modules.
Honey that can last forever? and it's a natural antibiotic? yes.

My father was a beekeeper before me, his father was a beekeeper before him, and I'm going to follow in their footsteps. And their footsteps were like this: Covered in bees!

EPIC episode ... thank you... I am a bee keeper, and knowledge is power...
A suggestion for a topic, is the docile traits of honey bees, and that they are freinds, and not enemies...
Thank you agiain, for the weapons of knowledge!
great show...!

Aww, honeycomb is like thousands of tiny hexagonal jars, that's really quite fantastic!

fun fact: honey has been discovered in sealed containers from ancient egypt...the honey was still good. that stuff lasts for a REALLY long time, it's antibacterial (owing in part to it's hydrogen peroxide content) and can serve for an antiseptic in a pinch (i don't know the situation in which one would have ready access to honey, no access to peroxide or alcohol, and be in need of antiseptic...but...there you have it)

About what he said, that honey can last practically forever, I think another Scishow episode mentioned that they had found 5000 year old honey in an egyptian pyramid that was still in good enough condition to eat. I believe they said this: "Honey is practically the only food where you have to worry less about the food going bad than you have to worry about the container it's in falling apart due to the passage of time"

I have a phobia of bees, and yet I find them and honey to be quite amazing.. very weird feeling being interested in something I'm insanely afraid of.

Bee's are by far my favourite animal and people think i'm weird! Every single little thing they do is for the rest of the hive, no selfishness, no one bee profits from the rest, all of them have their roles and their roles are done perfectly!

As a species we could a learn a thing or two about that...

the general properties of metals would be an interesting topic to cover. in extension, the properties of the elemental groups would be an interesting string of topics to cover
