Tree Tuesday - Cedar of Lebanon
I couldn’t really miss this off the list, they are very ‘look at me, I’m a massive tree!’
The national tree of Lebanon where some real ancients still exist.
It was an important tree to Assyria, Egypt, Phoenicia, Persia thousands of years ago and is mentioned in the bible 103 times.
I have turned some cedar from Ashridge, probably Atlas cedar which is a bit faster growing so was used after WW2 in a hope to replenish wood stock. The wood was not lovely to turn as it is sappy but it finished well, looked good and smelt amazing!
Most National Trust grounds will exhibit a cedar or two, I filmed these at National Trust Stowe and National Trust Ickworth.
Don’t get confused with all the trees that are called cedar, the white cedar, red cedar, red western cedar etc. They aren’t true cedars. Just look for the latin!
