What is the future of data engineering?

Right now Data Engineering is a really hot topic. Some think that automation and new tools will make Data Engineers unnecessary. I don't see that. Just like many other jobs Data Engineering will evolve over time. Automation can never do what a good data engineer does. However, new tools and automation will help make simpler tasks super easy to do.
