I agree that the universe as a whole is probably contingent and certainly that it is in detail. However, contingent is a very confusing term in everyday life usage and I have always greatly disliked it. I prefer the term 'degrees of freedom', as this allows for the possibility of some parameters and entities being close to or actually totally locked to categories and values, but at the same time some other parameters and entities having more degrees of freedom.
